Disk Space Issues

If you use ZBrush frequently, you may have noticed your hard drive filling up alarmingly fast. The culprit? ZBrush’s QuickSave feature and cached files, which can quietly consume gigabytes of storage.

The Quick Solution: Clear Out QuickSave Files

To free up space, start with QuickSave files. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Preferences > QuickSave in ZBrush.
  2. Click Delete QuickSave Files and confirm.
    • This can clear up hundreds of gigabytes, depending on your usage.

Optimize Your QuickSave Settings

To prevent QuickSave files from taking over your drive again, adjust the settings:

  • Set Max QuickSave Files to 10. This limits how many QuickSaves ZBrush keeps.
  • Increase QuickSave Rest Duration to 600. This reduces how often QuickSaves occur, ideal for large projects. NOTE: This saves one Quick Save every 10 hours so you'll need to save frequently by hand.
  • Enable Skip History and Optimize to make saves smaller.

Don’t Forget Old Versions

If you’ve upgraded ZBrush, old QuickSave files might still be eating up space. The path is usually:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\ZBrushData[version]\QuickSave

Clear the Decimation Master Cache

Another sneaky storage hog is the Decimation Master cache. Here’s how to clear it:

  1. Navigate to ZPlugin > Decimation Master.
  2. Click on Delete Caches files to reclaim more space.

Final Thoughts

ZBrush’s powerful features come with hefty storage demands, but managing QuickSave and cache files can make a huge difference. A few tweaks to your settings can free up space and keep your workflow smooth.
